Rise of Nations Controls Guide

Full PC hotkeys for menus, units, cities, camera, plus mobile notes.

Last updated:

Rise of Nations rewards actions per minute. Clicking every panel wastes seconds you need for justifications, trades, and micro. This controls guide lists the important PC keyboard and mouse shortcuts for Hyperant’s Roblox grand strategy: menu keys Q/W/E/A/S, unit keys T/X/C/G/V/H, city building shortcuts V/B, camera controls, Shift behaviors, and a short mobile note. Practice these while following Getting Started and managing builds from the Economy Guide. Return to the Guides Hub for other topics.

Primary menu hotkeys (Q / W / E / A / S)

These five keys open the core management panels without hunting the HUD:

KeyPanel
QCountry view — nation overview, decisions, formables, modifiers
WDiplomacy — relations, justifications, wars, treaties
EEconomy — factories, trade, spending, policies
ATechnology — research tree and auto-research toggles
SMilitary — doctrines, recruitment, operations, unit management

Memorize E for factory rushes and W for justification timing. Q is where formable decisions live when you are ready to form — see Formables. S pairs with the Military Guide when assigning doctrines.

Tab opens the main menu. Z deselects units or cities. Enter dismisses a single alert; hold Enter about two seconds to clear all alerts when the news feed explodes during world wars.

Mouse basics

  • Left click — select interface elements, a unit, or a city.
  • Left click drag — box-select multiple units.
  • Ctrl or Alt + left drag over cities — multi-select cities (Ctrl on Windows, Alt often on Mac; they are interchangeable in this game).
  • Right click — context actions: biome-specialized training menus on the train button, exclude a unit type from a mixed selection, reject certain diplomatic or trade popups, toggle technology ignore / auto-research / default, and push peace-treaty sliders to extremes when used on value buttons.
  • Right click drag — pan/move the globe camera.

Hold Space in various UI contexts for tooltips or multi-city selection behaviors depending on patch; combine with Shift when plotting lined paths for units.

Unit hotkeys (T / X / C / G / V / H)

Select one or more divisions, then use:

KeyAction
TTrain the selected unit (specialization / experience training)
XDisband the selected unit
CForm a line / line move with the selected unit
GToggle auto-merge
VSplit the selected unit in half
HHalt the selected unit

Training on matching terrain (mountain training in mountains) completes faster — a useful micro tip before Central Asian or Alpine wars. Split (V) to cover multiple cities after a breakthrough; halt (H) to lock entrenchment instead of jittering and wiping the bar. Auto-merge (G) helps reassemble stacks; turn it off when you need separate sieges. Disband (X) only when upkeep is killing you and the unit is truly surplus.

For lined pathing: hold Shift while clicking waypoints, then press C to form the line movement. This keeps armies on railroads of your choosing instead of suicidal default paths through enemy forts.

City shortcuts (V / B)

With cities selected, building-oriented hotkeys speed construction:

  • V — building / construction related shortcut in the city context (pair with on-screen building panel; used heavily when spamming factories and recruitment centers).
  • B — back / building navigation shortcut in city and related panels (also referenced as a back control in hotkey tutorials).

Exact building panel focus can vary slightly with UI updates, so confirm against the on-screen highlights the first time you play after a patch, then muscle-memory the pair. The goal is placing electronics, civilian, steel, and motor plants without reopening menus for every city — critical during the opening factory race described in the Economy Guide.

Multi-select river cities after the 2026 hydrology update to drop plants on 1.1x output cores in one pass.

Camera and map

InputAction
R or scrollZoom in
F or scrollZoom out
Right dragPan the globe
Map mode buttonsSwitch political, resource, formable, and other overlays

Disable formable/mission map overlays when they clutter combat micro. Resource map mode helps factory planning; political mode helps justification targets.

Shift: ignore units and precise city clicks

Hold Shift while clicking to ignore units and select the city underneath — essential when armies park on capitals and you need the city panel for buildings, unrest, or development. Shift also participates in tile selection and path plotting. Without Shift discipline, you will keep selecting tanks when you meant to open the city build list.

Other useful combos community references include Shift + M style unrest visualization and Shift + G photo mode that hides the HUD for screenshots. Bind awareness beats memorizing every rare combo on day one; master Shift-ignore first.

Alerts, research, and peace UI tips

  • Right click technologies to cycle ignore / auto-research / default so your research points keep flowing while you micro wars.
  • Right click training for biome specialization options.
  • In peace treaties, right click value controls to snap to max/min; T can recall last peace deal contexts in some UI flows; X appears in negotiate contexts — watch on-screen labels during your first treaty.
  • Justification notifications can offer immediate declare options after completion — do not click declare until manpower and entrenchment are ready (Military).

Mobile note

Mobile and tablet players use touch controls: tap units and cities, use on-screen buttons for panels, and pinch-zoom the map. There is no full parity with the QWEAS and TXCGVH keyboard layer. If you play seriously on mobile, expect slower APM: pre-plan factory builds, avoid hyperactive European wars, and prefer doctrines that forgive slower micro (Static Lines holding actions over constant Manoeuvre repositioning). Many competitive players still prefer PC for formable races and tank micro. Cloud mouse-and-keyboard on a supported device is closer to native PC than pure touch.

Practice routine

  1. Spawn in a quiet single-player-feeling public start or low-pressure region.
  2. For five minutes, only open panels with Q/W/E/A/S — no HUD clicking.
  3. Build factories using city multi-select and V/B habits.
  4. Recruit a stack; practice T train, V split, H halt, C line, G merge.
  5. Park units on a city and use Shift click to open the city instead of the unit.
  6. Zoom with R/F while panning to keep fronts visible.

Once hotkeys are automatic, revisit Getting Started, push eco, then fight with doctrine knowledge from the Military Guide. Controls do not win matches alone, but missing hotkeys lose them quietly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players search for every session.

What do Q, W, E, A, and S do in Rise of Nations?

Q opens Country, W Diplomacy, E Economy, A Technology, and S Military. These are the primary PC menu hotkeys.

What are the unit keys T, X, C, G, V, and H?

With units selected: T trains, X disbands, C forms a line, G toggles auto-merge, V splits the stack, and H halts movement.

How do I select a city under my army?

Hold Shift and click the city to ignore units and open the city panel. This is essential when stacks sit on capitals.

How do I zoom the camera?

Press R or scroll to zoom in, F or scroll to zoom out, and right-click drag to pan the globe.

Do mobile players get the same hotkeys?

No. Mobile uses touch UI without full keyboard parity. PC is recommended for fast factory and unit micro.

Where should I apply these controls first?

Use E and city shortcuts during the factory opening in the Economy Guide, then unit keys during wars in the Military Guide.
