Technology Guide — Rise of Nations

The May 17, 2025 Technology Update permanently changed how Rise of Nations players climb the tree. Research is no longer an instant spend-and-unlock click. Technologies take time, sit in a queue, and compete for research output while your factories and wars burn cash. Hyperant cut the discrete tech count from roughly 162–165 down to about 78, raised base research output dramatically (on the order of 2.8 → 15), introduced leveled techs, and added Research Efficiency so progress can accelerate without always raising raw research power cost the same way. This guide explains the rework, what to prioritize, how research sharing fits multiplayer, and why river-crossing technologies matter after the August 2026 River Update. Pair it with Economy, Military, Getting Started, and Updates.

What the 2025 rework actually changed

Before May 17, 2025, dumping research power often felt like buying permanent upgrades on the spot. After the rework:

  • Techs require elapsed progress toward a max research progress value.
  • You can queue multiple technologies and set priority order.
  • Many former separate nodes collapsed into multi-level technologies.
  • Base research output rose; many percentage research-output modifiers were reduced to compensate.
  • Leaders and spending split roles: Education Minister / education spending lean into research output; Head of Research / research spending lean into Research Efficiency.
  • Atomic / nuke research became more expensive in follow-up patches — see the Nukes Guide.

Practical impact: you cannot “catch up” an entire neglected tree in one idle minute. Mid-game wars are decided by who queued eco and military nodes on time.

Open the tree and manage the queue

Press A for the technology panel (Controls). Read cost, max progress, and branch tags before queueing vanity nodes. Auto-research helpers exist, but blind auto queues still waste months on low-value branches while your neighbor finishes tank attack or factory throughput. Manually pin:

  1. Economic throughput and building efficiency early.
  2. Infantry/tank fundamentals before a planned war.
  3. Political / corruption helpers when ideology pressure spikes.
  4. Specialty branches (navy, air, atomic) only when the theater demands them.

Prioritize economic research, then military

The consistent community pattern after the rework is economy first, military second for most openings:

  • Economic nodes multiply the factory race described in the Economy Guide — output, refinement, building speed, and related efficiency tools.
  • Military nodes multiply doctrines and unit quality from the Military Guide, but an unfunded elite army still collapses to debt.
  • Research-about-research nodes are situational; raw Education/Research spending and leaders often move the needle more than dumping early points into redundant research techs.

Once electronics and consumer goods are online, pivot the queue into the land branch that matches your doctrine: anti-tank and infantry quality for Massed/Specialization plans, armor and combined support for Manoeuvre, fort and entrenchment helpers for Static Lines.

Research Efficiency and leveled techs

Research Efficiency lets you push more progress without always paying a matching research-power spike. Improvement technologies that buff branch efficiency, research spending, and the Head of Research leader stack here. Leveled techs mean repeating a node until its cap — plan queues so you are not half-finishing five branches while an enemy finishes three decisive levels.

Research sharing

Allies can share research progress depending on diplomatic arrangements and current patch rules. Sharing is a coalition multiplier: one eco-focused partner and one military-focused partner can cover more of the reduced 78-tech list than two mirrored queues. Do not rely on sharing with strangers who will embargo you mid-formable. In public servers, treat sharing as a bonus, not a substitute for your own economic research spine.

River-crossing technologies (after August 2026)

The August 12, 2026 River Update added hydrology that punishes careless offensives. Infantry attacking across rivers fight at roughly 0.66x attack; tanks closer to 0.4x. Hyperant added technologies such as Riverine Watercraft Modernization and Enhanced River Fording Equipment to partially mitigate those penalties. After rivers went live — and as the river count climbed from about 86 toward the low 90s later in August — these nodes stopped being optional flavor for European and Asian campaigns. Queue them before a formable push that crosses the Rhine, Danube, Yangtze, or other dense corridors. Full map tactics live on the River Update page; combat fundamentals stay in Military.

Projects, policies, and the research ecosystem

Projects (May 2026) include research-category programs and capacity techs that raise how many projects run at once — see Projects. Policies such as Advance the Research Bureau boost research output when you can afford the political power upkeep — see Policies. Neither replaces a sane queue; they amplify it.

Practical research checklist

  1. Raise research/education spending when income allows — not while bankrupt.
  2. Queue economic throughput before prestige military leaves.
  3. Align military techs with your chosen land doctrine.
  4. Add river-crossing mitigation before river-dense offensives.
  5. Delay atomic research until the economy can carry enrichment — Nukes.
  6. Use research sharing only with trusted allies.
  7. Recheck Updates after every technology balance week.

Master the timed queue and Rise of Nations stops feeling like a random tech lottery. The 2025 rework rewards players who schedule research like they schedule factories and justifications.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players search for every session.

What did the May 17, 2025 Technology Update change?

Research became timed with queues and levels, discrete techs fell from roughly 162+ to about 78, base research output rose sharply, and Research Efficiency was introduced.

What should I research first in Rise of Nations?

Prioritize economic throughput and factory-related nodes, then military techs that match your doctrine. Delay navy, air, and nukes until the theater needs them.

Can I still unlock technologies instantly?

No. Post-2025 research spends progress over time in a queue. Instant catch-up guides are outdated.

Why do river technologies matter after August 2026?

River crossings apply heavy attack penalties to infantry and tanks. Mitigation techs added with the River Update make dense-river offensives viable.

Does research sharing replace my own queue?

No. Sharing helps coalitions cover more branches, but you still need a personal economic and military spine for wars you fight alone.

Where do nukes fit in the tech plan?

Atomic research is expensive after the 2025 rework. Read the Nukes Guide and only start enrichment when factories and uranium logistics can support it.
